EU Commission and Israel to liaise on humanitarian aid

An official from the European Commission will be arriving in Israel in the coming days to set up coordination of EU humanitarian aid with the Israeli authorities.

Simon Horner a spokesman for the Commission's humanitarian aid department ECHO, told journalists this morning in Tel Aviv that the role of the liaison officer would be to facilitate smooth and continuous access of EU humanitarian aid to Gaza as well as to coordinate the EU's relief efforts between the Commission and the various EU Member States.

Horner noted that the EU's humanitarian aid was always independent and impartial and was not directed through parties involved in the conflict.

Food, clean drinking water, medical assistance and shelter were the main priorities in Gaza he stressed.
