EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana appointed Colonel Alain Faugeras as new EU BAM Rafah Head of Mission. Faugeras, who took office on 24 November 2008, highlighted the fact that EU BAM-Rafah facilitated the only part of the Agreement on Movement and Access to be implemented and made a significant practical difference to the lives of thousands.

He said: "We want to work, to be involved and to make a difference. We can do this in several ways: firstly by maintaining our operational capability in order that we can redeploy to the Rafah Crossing Point as soon as the situation demands, and secondly by putting our expertise, and the information we have available, at the disposal of our international partners and by making it clear that we stand ready to help the parties in any way that we can.’’

Col Faugeras has an extensive international experience and a remarkable police background acquired in the French Gendarmerie.
